Europe is attempting to lead the way to the hydrogen fuel economy with its new energy blueprint

Europe is attempting to boost hydrogen fuel research with its new Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Platform. The Platform is designed to create more cooperation between countries and their research centers, as well cut the costs of hydrogen fuel by 90 to 99 percent. This new blueprint is designed to make hydrogen fuel economically competitive with current energy sources.

Original news summary: (http://renewableenergyaccess.com/rea/news/story?id=23988)

  • Though still a deadly catastrophe itself, last week's earthquake off the northwestern coast of Indonesia didn't materialize into a disastrous tidal wave like that which washed over most of the coastal communities in South Asia just after Christmas 2004, leaving death and destruction on an unprecedented scale in its wake.
  • Now, the European Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Platform has presented an industry wide blueprint for the medium- and long-term development of hydrogen and fuel cells.
  • "By bringing together all those with a stake in the future of hydrogen and fuel cell technology ...
  • The Platform brings together all the major players from the hydrogen sector; industry, research institutes, public authorities, Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), with the support of the European Commission.
  • "The potential for hydrogen fuel is very exciting," said Janez Potocnik, European Commissioner for Science and Research.
  • The Strategic Research Agenda proposes a ten-year research, development and demonstration program designed to lead to world-class technology and global leadership.
  • It also proposes budget allocations for the main research areas (hydrogen production, storage and distribution, and so on).
  • The Deployment Strategy describes the first steps and key milestones for the market penetration of portable, stationary and transport applications by 2020.
  • It also outlines the necessity for substantial and combined public/private partnerships, which should encourage movement from the present research/prototype demonstration stage to the mass-market introduction of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
  • "By bringing together all those with a stake in the future of hydrogen and fuel cell technology, with the support of the European Commission, the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Platform can assure the best use of resources for research, in ways that meet the needs of this growing industry," Potocnik said.
